The print was produced by the artist on Hahnemuhle. Leporello binding with cloth hinges, the boards covered in marbled papers produced by the artist, in a matching slipcase Fine copy  The original letter, addressed to the American people, was written by Hugo in response to the sentence of execution issued on John Brown in 1859, for his part in attempting to emancipate the slaves of Virginia. It was written while Hugo still maintained hope that the ‘noble nation’ of America, ‘sister of the French Republic’, would see its moral responsibility, and the Federation intervene to prevent Brown’s killing. The passionate appeal is presented here in both the original French and as an English translation.
