Lear (Edward).  Introduction by Donald Gallup Calligraphy by John O. C. McCrillis with facsimiles of Lear’s original verses and illustrations John Henry’s, New Haven, Connecticut,  1973 First Edition, First Issue One of 500 numbered copies, of which 300 copies were subsequently deliberately destroyed  Oblong 12mo Printed wrappers Fine copy. With Donald Gallup’s signed autograph presentation inscription, dated “Xmas 1973”, to Arthur Uphill on the half-title page  Shortly after this issue was distributed it was brought to Gallup’s attention that Lear had in fact illustrated a poem from Thomas Moore’s Irish Melodies. In due course Gallup caused 300 of the remaining copies to be destroyed and in 1985 the remaining 100 copies were re-issued with appolgetic “Notes Added 3 June 1985 by an Ignorant Man” pasted in. Arthur Uphill (1931-2009) joined the staff of Bertram Rota Ltd. in 1955 and worked for the company as a cataloguer for nearly thirty-eight years. Gallup’s inscription refers to the fact that the original of Lear’s manuscript passed through the company’s hands prior to coming in to his possession.
