The Dressmaker [a poem]

S. Dominic’s Press. Pepler (H.D.C.)  Wood-engraving of the Virgin knitting S. Dominic’s Press, Ditchling,  c.1926   Two broadsides   Two variant printings, one issued as the press’s “Broadsheet No. 1” and the other bearing the imprint “Printed for the Poetry Bookshop at St. Dominic’s Press” (30 cms. x 16 cms. and 34 cms. x 14 cms. respectively). Both broadsides slightly darkened at edges and a little dust-soiled; the S. Dominic’s issue very slightly defective at lower left-hand corner  While the “Broadsheet No. 1” printing was issued direct by the Press, it has been suggested that the printing commissioned by the Poetry Bookshop was never actually issued at all, Howard Woolmer in his bibliography describing it under ‘Ghosts’ and stating that it was not “published by the Poetry Bookshop”. It is uncertain which variant has precedence. In the examples offered here the S. Dominic’s Press version displays markedly better, sharper and darker printing, the titling is more prominently displayed and there is a drop-capital at the opening initial, otherwise the typeface is the same.
