Frere, Chairman of Heinemann, expressing his thanks for Frere’s “imaginative kindness” in sending an advance copy of this novel over which Church had been feeling “desperately apprehensive”: “I think of you coping with the myriad and urgent responsibilities of that huge concern, and realise what friendship means when you can turn so intimately & thoughtfully to one book and its author”
