Loosely inserted is a Typed Letter, signed, from the author (10th June 1982) to Michael Rubinstein, thanking him for granting access to his father’s file relating to the 1928 appearances of Hall’s The Well of Loneliness before Bow Street magistrates as an obscene publication: “... the volume of correspondence gave some idea of the scale of the campaign which your father undertook on behalf of the novel”  Michael Rubinstein’s father, Harold Rubinstein, was the young solicitor who, as part of the defence of The Well of Loneliness, arranged for some forty literary figures to stand ready to give evidence on behalf of its merits.
