In the Key of Blue and other prose essays

Symonds (John Addington).    Elkin Mathews & John Lane,  1893 Second Issue, the preceding issue being a limited edition of 50 copies    Cream cloth, bearing a design of bluebells and laurel by Charles Ricketts in gilt, top edge gilt. It is said that Ricketts rejected the pale blue issue on the ground that it would bring joking references to the popular laundry ingredient “Reckitt’s Blue” Almost imperceptible markings to cloth and some foxing to end-papers; bookplate; a near fine copy  These essays, composed over thirty years, represent Symond’s expansive interests, including ‘Greek and Renaissance literature, Description of Places, Translation, Criticism, Original Verse.’ The title essay on ‘the nomenclature of colour in literature’ is particularly engaging.
