The Light of Asia, or the great renunciation (mahabhinishkrama) being the life and teaching of Gautama

Arnold (Sir Edwin).   Thirty-two tissue-guarded photographs by Mabel Eardley-Wilmot, printed from continuous tone process blocks and inset on recessed mounts; two additional photographs printed directly onto boards Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co.,  1908     Vegetable parchment boards, with title gilt on spine and front board, top edge gilt, silk marker. The book was lavishly printed on a specially commissioned paper which is watermarked with the words ‘Light of Asia;’ the deckle edges are untrimmed, and some pages uncut. The tissue guards are printed in red ink with apposite extracts from the poem The parchment has darkened from its original cream to a sombre grey due to dust and handling, and there are a few light scratches. Inscription on front free end-paper from the year of publication, sporadic light foxing on end-papers and very occasionally throughout. This is a very nice luxury edition of the popular work which was first published in 1879
