Autograph Letter signed

Haggard (H. Rider).    Redcliffe Square, London,  17 February 1889      3 pages, 8vo, minor tears at folds  We have not been able to decipher the name of the recipient (possibly “Halne”, but the letter is interesting, mentioning that he has discussed the matter with [Walter] Besant, declining to join a council for which Haggard feels unqualified (“I [am] a most ignorant person in all financial matters”) but hoping that the “great reform will meet with success”. He concludes: “I am sure that your great reform will meet with success. It is enormously plucky of you to undertake it, for the paths of reformers are made but with thorns”.

Price: £250
